6 Rules Every Curly Haired Girl Must Follow// BloomMe HK

Girls with curls can run the world. That is, if they care for their curls well.

One of the most unique and characterising natural hair textures, curly hair is ridiculously good at inducing head-turning in public when properly looked after. If you’re a curly haired girl that has found her locks a little limp recently, then perhaps there’s some rules you’ve forgotten to abide by to keep those curly bouncing.

Use less shampoo

A strange rule, but a rule you’ll thank us for is to hold off on using a huge amount of shampoo next time you’re having a good shower session. Lathering up your curls less is the secret to getting those bouncy, healthy curls that you’ll see all over the world.

Try to reduce your shampooing to only once a week or less, and as an alternative try to invest in a co-wash product instead. You can rinse your hair with conditioner as well when you shower which will provide you with a clean hair feeling without drying out the strands.

Get conditioning

Curly hair tends to be naturally a little drier than straight hair because the natural oils have a difficult time making their way to the end of your locks. Hair masks, deep conditioners, leave in treatments, and even pre-shampoo products should be your saving grace when your hair is lacking that va-va-voom and screaming for some TLC. By conditioning heavily, your hair will soon be feeling much healthier and much more moist (not a lovely word but the correct one here).

Swap your towel for a t-shirt or microfibre cloth

Curly hair will turn into a gigantic frizz ball when roughly towel dried straight after a shower, and if you constantly find yourself looking like a fuzz ball after a carefully conditioned wash then perhaps it’s time to ditch the towel and instead start using something new. Using a micro fibre material, or even a simple t-shirt, scrunch up your hair and dab it to dry. Using this method, you are not only avoiding damage to your mane but also helping to keep the coil pattern in tact.

No dry brushing

A little bit of a no-brainer for most girls with curls, this rule is set in place to ensure that you don’t experience any breakage or permanent damage. In order to brush your locks, take a wide-toothed comb into the shower with you and use it to gently tame your tangles into submission. Detangling in the shower not only saves time but also minimises the amount of damage you can do to dry hair.

Choose oils over serums

Beyonce seems to always be sporting shiny curls, so why don’t yours seem to do that? Well for one thing, Beyonce has a team behind her keeping her hair that way. And for another, you may be missing that shine because you are using serums and not oils. If you start by introducing oils into your beauty regime, you’ll soon find that the light will start bouncing off your curls in no time. You can use olive, coconut, even castor oil if you’re into the natural stuff.

Always use heat protector

You wouldn’t bake your skin in the sun without sunscreen, now would you? So why would you subject your curls to heat without giving it a barrier of protection? If you use a blowdryer to dry your hair after a shower, be sure to always apply a heat protectant first. If you can get your hands on a hood dryer (like the ones used at salons) even better.

Get your trims done

Curly hair needs care too! If you’re not one for a regular hair trim, then there is probably a mountain of split ends hiding in your mountains of waves (just because you can’t see them doesn’t mean they aren’t there!) Getting your hair regularly trimmed will bring new life back to your locks. Always insist on a haircut being performed on dry hair rather than wet hair, and also put a stop to your stylist using a thinning shear on your curls.
